Owls of the United States and Canada: A Complete Guide to Their Biology and Behavior by Wayne Lynch (Author). There is no such thing as a group of birds extra mysterious and interesting than owls. The loudmouths of the raptor world, they peep, trill, toot, bark, growl, shriek, whistle, chittle, whoop, chuckle, boom, and buzz. Certainly, only a few really "hoot." They've become the stuff of lore and legend-from the Roman delusion that an owl foot may reveal secrets and techniques to the First Nations perception that an owl feather might give a new child higher night time vision. But the reality about owls is rather more exciting.
In this beautiful book, celebrated pure historical past author and wildlife photographer Wayne Lynch reveals the secrets and techniques of this elusive species with beautiful images, personal anecdotes, and accessible science. The pictures alone are masterpieces. In contrast to most printed owl photos, that are portraits of birds in captivity, the vast majority of those had been taken within the wild-a product of the author-photographer's incredible data and patience.
Lynch complements the photographs with a wealth of details about anatomy, habitat, weight loss plan, and household life. For every of the 19 species that inhabit Canada and the United States, he provides a spread map and a short dialogue of its distribution, population size, and status. Lynch debunks myths about owls' "supernatural" powers of sight and hearing, discusses courtship rituals, and presents private ideas for locating owls in the wild.
From the great horned to the tiny elf owl, this superb quantity captures the beauty and mystery of these charismatic birds of prey.
A beautiful book. The massive format and abundant pictures at first recommend a coffee desk guide, but Lynch's contribution is far more than that. The writing is intellectually luminous, displaying a superb mind and careful researching. Although the creator may be very updated on present analysis within the subject, the scholarship is unobtrusive - the textual content is freed from footnotes and citations although these can be found at the end of the book.
The pictures are in a league of its own. Lynch is a well known wildlife photographer, and these pictures simply show why. The artistry and a technical excellence are breathtaking. As an illustration, the whiskered screech-owl on p. 16 consists the best way a painter would compose, but the photo nonetheless brings out the person feathers, the half-closed eyes, the long beak hidden behind the whiskers. These birds are so carefully noticed they present more than I can see with my binoculars in a woodland walk. And add to this the sector data: owls usually are not sparrows or seagulls that one can see anywhere. To capture them on the movie, the photographer should spend hours in a blind, and travel to locations far off the interstate. This e-book is one that can stay in the thoughts after it has been read.
This book combines the personal experiences of the creator with detailed details about the owls that live within the United States and Canada. The background info given on this e-book will be applied to multiple species of owls, and in some instances, it might be utilized extra typically to birds of prey. There are comparisons between people and owls to provide the reader a better picture of what the creator is describing. When there is a piece of basic information given, the writer offers examples of which owls that piece of knowledge might be applied. The ebook is filled with great photos, and features a guide of owls that is located between the first two chapters.
This is one of the greatest books about owls that I've read.
